This one was a little more than I could handle on my own. Thanks to my dad for helping me get through it. Some of those boards were so heavy I just couldn't lift them by myself! I'm also officially Broke as a Joke, which means I can't afford to buy any patio furniture. I think I will just lay a towel out there for myself. lol

I lost my camera, and I only snagged a couple pics with my mom's camera before her batteries died, so forgive the lack of photographic evidence of my brilliance. er... ;)
The patio umbrella was a gift from my parents, and the grill was an old one my dad had stored in his shop. I am using PVC pipe to keep the umbrella upright, but I need a 40 lb bag of sand on the base at least. Maybe need to tie it to the railings too, not sure. The shade is absolutely essential here in SC, since the sun sets in the back of the house.

Since the deck is really close to the treehouse, I rigged up this pulley system so the kids can send snacks and junk to each other... so far we've already grilled hot dogs on sticks (their favorite camping treat, which I love because I don't have to buy hot dog buns), and we're set to make S'mores next.

I can't say that all of my efforts are appreciated by my offspring. In fact, they seem pretty oblivious half the time, and I've even been getting some flack for being less than perfect lately. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm not a gourmet cook, or that I get super pissed when they break my precious vacuum cleaner. Not sure -- but life has been difficult these last few days. I keep reminding them that we need to be thankful for all of our blessings, not just when Santa comes to visit. :/

Sigh. Is the summer over yet???

  1. You did an amazing thing to finish that deck. I love the pulley system. I used to rig up things like that for the kids too and they love it.

  2. Katie, you continue to AMAZE me!!! The deck looks GREAT and I LOVE the pulley system - so cute!

  3. Just a few more weeks! :o) I love the pulley system. What a cool mom to do that for her kids. Great job on the deck. It looks like it was a lot of work but well worth it!

Welcome to my three ring circus. Cake? Tequila? Pardon me while I cut this lumber and yell at my kids for the 100th time --

About Me

My photo
For many years I was a mechanical engineer by day, a house renovator by night, and a single mom. I previously built a tiny house on Tybee Island that I sold in 2015. Then I lost my day job, met Prince Charming, and now work full time demolishing (fixing) his lake house. ;) Stop by for the house stuff, stay for the never-ending disasters, pianos falling out of the sky, floods, threats of financial ruin, & panic attacks. It's like house flipping meets the zombie apocalypse! with lots of kids!
