Creative Door Trim

I spent today working on Deb's kitchen since my kids were otherwise occupied. I trimmed the pantry and garage doors using some scrap I had from scavenging.
You've probably seen this idea before:
Where you stack a board on top of the door frame and then add crown molding?
I had some scrap trim and wanted to do something similar to Deb's doorways on the kitchen, except I am not going to buy crown. I already had a couple of pieces of crown I'd scavenged for the cabinets, and I didn't have enough for the doors.
Here are the doors this morning. (ignore the paint sampling on the wall! I'm installing a chalkboard on the pantry door too.)
Ok so I don't have any crown molding but I *do* have a 1X4 and a scrap piece of this. What is it? Is it picture rail? I'm not sure. Regardless, I can make this into the look I want.

Since it's not going to stick out from the frame the way that crown does, we'll just hold it flush against the fence and miter the corners.

Like so. Caulk everything, and here it is waiting for paint:
There's a whole bunch of unpainted trim in this picture, but it gives you an idea. You could use just about anything to create this kind of decorative door trim. I finished framing the tops of the cabinets today too, using a bunch of salvaged baseboards. That will have to wait for another post.
Absolutely everything needs to be painted now, and we're still having trouble selecting the wall color.

And Debbie surprised me with this bag yesterday. I flipped my lid when I saw it -- I will carry it EVERYWHERE, forever and ever. :)

  1. Katy love how you made use out of those scraps for a truly professional finish on those door frames. Now I'm looking at my boring door moldings thinking I should raid my scrap pile! Thanks for the inspiration.
