Dawn lives next door to me. She has a son the same age as my middle kid, and I have had such a good time getting to know her over the past 2 years.

Last year during the great blizzard of '11, we tried to rescue a stray cat that ended up dying in her garage. It was a traumatic bonding experience. Now she's decided to become an emergency foster parent. She has a huge heart for children, the kind of person who has zero enemies.

You know when I discovered she was an awesome person?  The day that my ex husband drove 8 hours to my house, to bring his girlfriend to see the kids and explain that she was going to be their new stepmom. They pulled up, jumped out of the car, gushed all over my kids, and took them out for pizza. (The kids already knew who she was since she started dating Daddy before the divorce. It was a surreal moment for me.)

As they pulled away from the curb, I closed the front door and just stood in my foyer feeling like I was going to vomit all over my shoes.

My doorbell rang.

It was Dawn, she had been watching the whole scene from her front window.  "She's not better than you."  She opened her arms and I burst into tears and literally cried all over her.

She just knew. I'll never forget that; God rang my doorbell right when I needed it the most.

Anyway. Dawn is a wonderful person and I love her -- and I'm going to build her something. She wants floor-to-ceiling built ins for her family room. We're going to make it happen.

  1. I think this during almost every post of yours that I read so it has to be true. You are a wonderful and amazing person! Dawn is lucky to have a friend like you in her life just as you are lucky to have her. Bless you both.

  5. Katy,
Your post has brought tears to my eyes....We are God's hands and feet here on earth, and He knew!
Both you and Dawn are blessed to have each other! Can't wait to see what the two of you come up with, and just a little green with envy that I can't be there to help!

  7. Is it bad that I love that dancing banana? Heh!

So glad you guys have found each other. I know the feeling y'all going through. I was single mother for years before I remarried. Let's just say that as soon as my oldest graduates, I will cut off all ties related to my ex. I really am looking foward to that day.

Have fun building....wish I was there to learn! :)

  8. really a great story, and with such a solid friend!

we don't become something worthy because a man loves us...we are already worthy, we are already who we are. with or without a man's endorsement. this is not to bash on men, but rather to say that you are glorious already. and if or when someone comes into your life with love for you- that will add to your life but it won't mean that you've arrived or that you are now worthy. it is so easy to feel your generous spirit in everything you share in this blog. that ex wasn't worthy of you. :)

Welcome to my three ring circus. Cake? Tequila? Pardon me while I cut this lumber and yell at my kids for the 100th time --

About Me

My photo
For many years I was a mechanical engineer by day, a house renovator by night, and a single mom. I previously built a tiny house on Tybee Island that I sold in 2015. Then I lost my day job, met Prince Charming, and now work full time demolishing (fixing) his lake house. ;) Stop by for the house stuff, stay for the never-ending disasters, pianos falling out of the sky, floods, threats of financial ruin, & panic attacks. It's like house flipping meets the zombie apocalypse! with lots of kids!
